Meet Laura Fine, the Democratic candidate for the Illinois Senate, 9th District

A fighter against the powerful insurance industry

After her husband Michael lost his arm at the shoulder when a cement truck plowed into his car head on, Laura Fine’s family faced bankruptcy when their insurance company refused to pay medical bills for multiple surgeries and attempted to drop her husband’s coverage. With close to $600,000 in medical bills, Laura fought tirelessly with the health insurance company for the quality care her husband needed to recover."

“In 2012, I ran to represent the IL 17th District in the House in order to take on the powerful insurance industry and to became an advocate for leveling the playing field for all Illinois families against special interests who put their profits above people,” said Laura Fine.

An accomplished legislator

In one of her first acts as a legislator, Laura Fine authored a bill that would increase mandatory automobile insurance liability limits, which had been frozen in Illinois since the 1980s. This bill, which is now law, insured that any family that suffers a tragedy or crisis would have the resources they need to take care of their loved ones.

Continuing her support for working families, this year Laura led the fight to block President Trump’s health care law in Illinois. Laura passed legislation that requires insurance companies to cover pre-existing conditions. That bill is on the Governor’s desk.

A vocal champion for women's rights

Laura Fine has been a champion of women’s rights. She has been endorsed by Planned Parenthood and Personal PAC.  In addition, Laura has a 100% pro-choice voting recording and is a Co-Sponsor of HB40.

An advocate for public education

As a former teacher, Laura is a passionate advocate and supporter of public education on all levels. Despite Governor Rauner’s constant attacks on public education, Laura continues to stand up for public education in Springfield and fight to make sure every child in her district and the rest of the state receive their fair share of education funding.

A Glenview resident and active in the community

As a resident of Glenview most of her life, Laura and both of her sons are proud graduates of Glenbrook South High School.  She is a member of the Kiwanis Club of Glenview-Northbrook, the Rotary Club of Glenview Sunrise and the Glenview/Glencoe League of Women Voters

A supporter of a clean environment

Laura, like so many of us, understands the imperative to maintain a clean environment for today and for our children and grandchildren's future. She supports keeping the Great Lakes clean and improving air quality.
